Maya Iwabuchi (violin), Charlotte Scott (violin), Gareth Lubbe (viola), Alice Neary (cello), Matthew Hunt (clarinet), Amy Harman (bassoon), Omar Massa (bandoneon), Julien Quentin (piano) and Hellensmusic Masterclass Students.
This evening’s programme brings together classics from three composers renowned for their sparkling wit and humour, which will encase the world premiere of a new work written specially for Hellensmusic by composer and bandoneon virtuoso Omar Massa.
Haydn’s last quartet from his sixfold op.20 set, which historically raised the bar for all future composers writing in this ensemble form, positively radiates with joyous contrapuntal conversation. Dohnányi’s Sextet embodies the height of Romanticism, with its rich harmonies and sweeping melodies, alongside playful music that could easily evoke the charm of a Tom and Jerry cartoon, bridging the 19th and 20th centuries.
At the centre of the evening is the world premiere of Omar Massa’s Prologue and Tango and Tango Scherzo for bandoneon and strings. Once conceived as a portable organ in 19th-century Germany, the bandoneon found its soul in Argentine tango. Massa’s work honours this heritage while showcasing his own distinctive musical voice, performed by the composer himself alongside Hellensmusic resident artists.
