This concert invites us to explore the theme of connections through a panoramic lens. Elgar’s melodious Romance, with the lyrical tenor voice of the bassoon, bridges his musical lineage from Mozart onwards. Shostakovich’s profound influence resonates in Lera Auerbach’s intense first Piano Trio, connecting her Soviet heritage to her contemporary voice. Mozart’s Kegelstatt Trio, composed with friendship at its core, was written to be performed among his closest acquaintances. The profoundly moving Cavatina from Beethoven’s late String Quartet offers a poignant meditation on loss and acceptance and will be performed in memory of a dear friend of Hellensmusic. Finally, marking 50 years since the death of one of the 20th Century’s most important composers, the programme concludes with Shostakovich’s visceral second Piano Trio, an outpouring of grief at the tragic death of a close friend.
