Smetana String Quartet No. 1 in E minor ‘From My Life’

Fauré’s Piano Quartet No 1 opens dramatically with a surging Brahmsian theme though there is much gentleness in the ensuing dialogue.  There follows a quicksilver Scherzo; an Adagio of desperate sadness; and a dazzling Finale.  The writing in Rebecca Clarke’s three-movement Viola Sonata covers the entire range of the viola’s compass.  The Sonata’s impressionistic outer movements frame a light-as-air Scherzo. Beethoven’s Op 11 Trio exists in two versions, one for piano trio and the other, being heard in this concert, for clarinet trio.  An arresting unison figure ushers in the sparkling opening movement; the soulful main theme of the serene central Adagio gives a glimpse of the Beethoven yet to come; and the final movement is an ingenious set of variations on a popular opera tune of the day.  Smetana’s First Quartet is an autobiographical work which musically portrays the enthusiasms of his youth; his young life as a dancer; the bliss of his first love who later became his wife; and the onset of deafness, represented in the music by a high whistling sound on first violin.
