PROGRAMME
Chausson Concert for Violin, Piano and String Quartet, Op. 21
and solo works by various composers
This composition by Chausson is a unique conception and a work of brilliance. It is a mélange of chamber music and concerto, the violin being the solo instrument as it has great prominence. It is a rhapsodic work which owes much to Chausson’s teacher César Franck and also to Brahms with its passionate effusiveness, extended melodic lines and full-bodied harmonic texture. The first of its four movements is largely turbulent; the second, a Sicilienne, lilting with a very French feel; the third melancholic; and the Finale exuberant and virtuosic.
