Schubert Piano Trio No. 1 in B flat major, D.898
Schubert’s Piano Trio No 1, a product of the final year of the composer’s life, is a creation of consummate beauty. The expansive first movement is one of unfettered lyricism with a glorious second theme and rich trio textures. The outer sections of the ravishing and dream-like Andante breathe tranquillity and the effect of the intertwining duet of violin and cello over the gentle piano accompaniment is mesmerising. The scintillating Scherzo juxtaposes two Viennese dances, the waltz and the ländler. The scoring is spacious in the joyful Finale and the exhilarating Coda brings to an end what is acknowledged to be one of the masterpieces of chamber music.
